The Beautiful Truth….About Cancer?
I love documentaries.
And good food.
And I love that I have like-minded friends with whom I can share them!
Last week I was treated to a gourmet meal at Thomas & Jeanette’s house.
Sushi-esque appetizers made from zucchini and cucumber, baked tilapia and an eggplant stew.
Our after dinner fare was Foodmatters–a very well made documentary about how what we eat really does matter.
The following week was a potluck style meal of:
- Tomato Basil soup
- Chicken Meatballs
- Asian Quinoa Salad
- Organic Red Wine
- Mint Dark Chocolate Coconut Milk ice cream.
Yum (!)
The night was filled with good friends, good conversation and a good documentary. This time we watched The Beautiful Truth. While the production quality was not quite up to par with other more recent films (like Foodmatters or Food, Inc.), the content was still brilliant.
It chronicled a young boy’s homeschool lesson to uncover the truth behind alternative cancer treatments–treatments that are not used and are even shunned in the traditional medical community (who instead use dangerous, ineffective treatments like chemotherapy and radiation). The main focus of the film centered on the Gerson Institute, founded by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920s.
On their website I read:
The Gerson Therapy is a safe, natural treatment developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920’s that uses organic foods, juicing, coffee enemas, detoxification and natural supplements to activate the body’s ability to heal itself. Over the past 60 years, thousands of people have used the Gerson Therapy to recover from so-called “incurable” diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.
So the Beautiful Truth about a seemingly ‘incurable’ disease that claims thousands of lives?
There is hope!
Cancer can be beat.
And our food really does matter.
Since our Dinner & Doc nights, my friend Thomas has been inspired to chronicle his own journey to True Health. You can read his story and follow his journey on his site: TakeItBack.me
My ever-growing list of documentaries I want to watch could still use some additions.
What documentaries do you recommend?

July 19, 2010 at 2:46 pmIt's not about food, but it is about health: The Business of Being Born. It is a beautiful documentary about natural childbirth versus using drugs to "stimulate" labor, which can hurt both the baby and the mother.
