Kumara Chips

What is kumara, you might ask?

Kumara could be called the newest addition to my list of favorite foods, but really it’s just a variation of one that’s already on there–kumara is New Zealand’s sweet potato!

And in New Zealand, what I have always known as french fries, they call chips. So Kumara Chips? Otherwise known as Sweet Potato Fries!

Kumara Chips or Sweet Potato Fries

I posted the recipe for my Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries here, but I figured a better explanation of how to prepare them was in order (plus, I love kumara and decided they needed their own post!) Gold Kumara are my favorites. I love their mild sweet flavor.

I like to bake mine in the oven as opposed to deep frying them. My method is clean, quick, easy, and so delicious that my husband is lucky if they all reach the table for dinner!

Kumara Chips or Sweet Potato Fries

Ingredients:

2-3 kumara or sweet potatoes
1/4 c. melted coconut oil or grapeseed oil
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/4 tsp. cinnamon

Directions:

Chop the kumara or sweet potatoes into french fry shapes (or chips if you’re a Kiwi or Brit!). Choose the thickness you prefer–thicker steak fries will just take a bit longer to cook.

Place all ingredients in a large plastic bag and toss it around until all the potatoes are well coated with oil and spices.

Coating Kumara in Oil & Spices

Place all the fries on a baking sheet in a single layer.

Kumara Chips Ready to Cook

Bake at 400 F for about 30 minutes, flipping at ten minute intervals.

Kumara Chips

Kumara chips are fantastic served with just about anything–burgers, salads, or, of course, fish & chips!

I had no idea what a kumara was until I read this post, but they sound delish! Of course, I like anything potato-related though… :)

Yum! These look delicious! I would definitely use the coconut oil over the grapeseed though. I get a nice energy boost from coconut oil and all those wonderful medium chain saturated fats.
